Chic-Chocs 2023 – New

2,699$2,799$ (CAD)

* Brand new bike, ready to ride. Few units still available.

The Chic-Chocs has proven its abilities over the past few years in endurance races and winter expeditions. Whether it’s for the Raid du Fjord, the Wendigo Ultra, or riding with confidence on groomed trails, the Chic-Chocs delivers.

A stable geometry with a long wheelbase increases traction and flotation on soft surfaces. In addition, the Chic-Chocs is designed with a 205mm q-factor, the narrowest available for use with tires up to 5″ wide. Not to be overlooked for an ergonomic position.

Two Shimano drivetrains available with RaceFace cranksets and cockpit. Quality SunRingle rims and hubs (ready for -30degC!), and studdable tires that can be easily converted tubeless complete the package.

Throw on some 29×3″ wheels when the snow melts, and you’ve got a 4-season bike ready for backcountry bikepacking trips!

Main Features

TRIBUTE TO THE ATLANTIC CARIBOU

In 2016, the total population of Caribou living in eastern Canada, mainly in the Chic-Chocs Mountains in Gaspésie, was 140. Today the count is less than 90. This is one of the 8 mammals threatened with extinction in Canada.

When you look at the art from the front of the frame, the Caribou will appear as if he’s charging through the mountain forests. The rider is charging through the path ahead!

“Quebec-based Panorama Cycles has a unique approach to their bike graphics, and it’s one we’ve really been appreciating. I think it’s a great way to set their bikes apart from the rest, and so far they all look pretty solid.”

Got this bike in March 2024 after looking at many options in the steel 29er category and visiting Panorama’s facility... in Granby. Mine is a size large with carbon fork, XT gears, SRAM Level-T brakes, Race Face cockpit, and Hunt carbon wheels. For context, my previous mountain bike was a Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon (now sold) and my other bikes include an Ibis Hakka gravel bike and a 9:0:7 Lynx carbon fat bike with a Manitou fork for winter. After bike-packing around Eastern Ontario with a minimalist setup on the Hakka last summer, I decided I wanted something slightly burlier to handle rougher trails and carry just a little more camping gear and food, where the fat bike would be overkill.First impression is this is a really pretty bike. The green looks much better than the photos suggested to me and the graphics by Pelveltica are simply stunning. Coupled with its large wagon wheels, the Taiga looks like nothing else. The ride is composed and confident, the steel feels lively but not springy, and the 2.6” tires roll over ruts, bumps, and mud with tons of grip. It climbs rocky, rooty, wet single track competently and for the most part I don’t feel like going full rigid (after many years of full suspension) is giving up much—as long as I don’t try to go fast. The Taiga is all about simplicity and durability. Now, having ridden only about 225km of gravel roads and singletrack, it feels most comfortable cruising at 25km/hr in 9th gear. Sure, it’ll go faster (and will once I get my summer legs back!), but it’s not a race bike. Its weight, wheels, and wind resistance add up, but not necessarily in a bad way. This is a bike for long days of cruising over rough terrain, exploring and enjoying the sights rather than blasting past them.As for sizing, I'm 183cm tall with a 34" inseam and long arms, and the large frame fits me perfectly. It's a tall bike: with the seat at full height adjusted to my leg length I can't touch the ground! However, the height provides great ground clearance and pedal strikes are rare. Plus, the dropper post is a revelation for me because I never used one on my other bikes due to the added weight and complexity. On the Taiga it makes a lot of sense, and I find myself making frequent adjustments to suit the terrain. There are a few changes I made to the stock setup and would recommend. First, the handgrips have thin, punishing rubber that quickly induces pain on rough roads. Replacing them with Ergon GR3 grips was a huge improvement. A pair of SQLabs 410 2.0 inner bar ends mounted just inside the drips provides an alternate hand position similar to riding on the brake hoods of a drop-bar bike. The stock tires (Maxxis Rekon 2.6”; 870g) are grippy but will be replaced by a pair of Vittoria Mezcal 2.6 tires (927g). The slight weight penalty of the Mezcals should be offset by their lower rolling resistance due to an almost continuous centre tread. Out of the box, the Rekon/Hunt rim combo is a piece of cake to set up tubeless — just add tubeless valve stems and sealant. For a rear rack I chose the Tumbleweed Pannier Rack in 355mm height which, like its slightly lighter cousin the T-Rack, is a perfect fit for the Taiga. Just mount the legs to the insides of the lower braze-ons. On my gravel bike I use the Apidura 14L seat pack which also fits well on the Taiga, but it interferes with the dropper post. Plus, I find seat bags to be unstable and distracting in rough terrain. The rack coupled with a pair of Arkel 12.5L Orca panniers should provide more usability and stability while keeping a reasonable streamlined profile. Also of note, the Ortlieb 6L Frame Bag is an almost perfect fit for the large Taiga frame. Mounting a roll bag under the handlebar is awkward due to the short stem and cables.Overall I’ve been very happy with the Taiga. It came well adjusted from the factory and well packed in its shipping box. It rides almost silently aside from tire hum, has ample grip and comfort, and the full-rigid design with steel frame gives it a lively personality.read more

I ride bikes a lot but mostly full suspension. I am an instructor for Deer Valley and SimplyMTB so spend most days... pedaling around. However, i haven't had ridden a hard tail mountain bike in over a decade. I have started getting into bikepacking but not to the point where I wanted something too bikepack specific like a tumbleweed. The Taiga has been amazing. It's a great trail bike suspended up front and with the ridgid carbon fork has been great for over nighters. Am planning on a longer trip early June to really put it through its paces. LOVE the color, design and all the mounts.read more

I decided I wanted a new bike, but after searching the bigger bike shops in town it seemed like what I was looking for... was a bit of a unicorn. I wanted a drop-bar bike that could handle some wider tires for winter riding, would be able to hit some gravel roads come spring, and that I could do some bike packing in from some quick trips to hopefully eventually doing a full cross-country tour. It appeared most bikes I found would handle a couple of those things, but not all three. I had eventually settled on the fact I would like a steel bike for comfort, but hopefully something that was still light. Most of the bike shops only had aluminium and carbon as options. The shops that did have steel seemed like they were only really built to be loaded up, or were quite heavy, or had low-end components throughout.I was eventually introduced to Panorama from one of the very small shops here. Looking at their website, it soon became clear the Anticosti was the unicorn I was looking for. I traded a few emails with Panorama seeing if I could get it in a 2x, seeing if I could get the gear ratio where I wanted it and they were very happy to help and willing to customize the build. I sat on this for a while, continuing to do some reading and getting paralyzed by all of the opinions that exist on the various bikepacking forums and subs. Eventually I decided that 1x would do the trick for me and would give me a bit of extra space for a bar bag and just ordered the bike stock.I was excited and impatient, so emailed them about the status of when my bike would ship. Not only did they send me a response, but also a picture of the bike on the stand getting put together. I had also inquired about if a certain fender would fit and they said it would and even offered to bring it in and install before they shipped it to me. If it hadn't been for the gift cards I had to my LBS I would have been all over that offer. When the bike arrived, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to assemble. In another life, I put together bikes at Sport Chek and was used to having to fiddle with gears and brakes that didn't remotely line up and screws and bolts that were no where close to torqued properly. This was the smoothest bike build I had ever experienced and had it assembled in under 10 minutes. Most of my time was removing the recycled packaging they used to protect it! I spun the pedals and shifted the gears, expecting that I would have to do some small adjustments. No, everything shifted perfectly. The brakes were spaced perfectly with no rub and good tension on the levers. Putting this thing together was an absolute treat.I got out for a ride on it this evening and it handled great, despite the packed snow and icy conditions. I have a studded tire, but opted to try it stock (with the exception of the fenders I eventually installed). The bike handles great and is very comfortable, even without a chamois. The tires it comes with handle packed snow no problem and was relatively stable on ice. I will have a bit of fiddling around to do to get my ride position right, but I am so happy with this bike!If you're considering buying from Panorama, do not hesitate! They will answer all your questions, can customize pretty much anything you're looking to do, and are priced extremely well compared to the big players. When I need a new bike within their range, I will definitely be a return customer. I'm thrilled with the product, their service, and appreciate they are a Canadian company and doing right by the planet.read more

I purchased a Panorama Tiaga from these guys, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s an incredible bike and i constantly get... compliments on how well it’s built and how awesome it looks. I’m from NZ, and arranged to have my frame, fork and rohloff hub package to be delivered to a friend in Canada for me to collect while I was over there visiting. Panorama were amazing to deal with, and the true test of how good a company is, is when things go wrong. Rohloff sent the wrong hub, panorama were so apologetic, and did EVERYTHING they could to firstly get my hub to me in Canada, but once they realized that wasn’t going to happen, they took care of everything, and the hub was delivered to my door in NZ, at no extra cost to me. Not only do they produce outstanding frames, they back it up with the service to match. I’d recommend them to anyone wanting a high quality steel frame bike.read more

I recently bought Panorama Anticosti. It arrived today as expected and I quickly tested in the building. I can say that... it is a wonderful lightweight steel bike for touring and gravel riding! Exactly what I was looking for! They packaged the bike really nicely, and it was an easy set up. It is tuned. What you see is Large size, I am actually only 175cm tall (5’9) but I like long reach and relaxed position. The bike weighs only 10.2 kg, without pedals. Seat is surprisingly comfortable. My wife also loved its colour and character 🙂 It is a fun bike. I think the philosophy behind Panorama Cycles is a good one and this bicycle reflects it.I have been riding 2022 Kona Sutra 56cm, but I find that bike heavy (14.5 kg), especially during uphill climbing. I am selling that one soon.I will update this post as I make observations after daily rides around Vancouver.Update: I took Anticosti to an 80 km ride from Cultus Lake to Chilliwack lake in British Columbia. It was a wonderful ride! This is a very optimum bike for both gravel and road riding! It is lightweight, fast and nimble. I can’t wait riding another long trip 🙂 next time, I will upload a video.Update2: I took this bicycle to a gravel riding in Stanley Park, Vancouver downtown. This Bicycle is very nimble and very comfortable. In the evening I also took it for a night ride, and I tested its stability. Very happy with this Bicycle.Thank you Panorama Cycles!read more

The trouble with 5star reviews these days is that people typically give 5stars for just meeting their expectations. So... what do you do when you have a product and buying experience that is far beyond what you were expecting? Panorama & their Anticosti needs 6stars IMO.What a great story: fairly local company (for me anyway); bikes are designed locally and produced in one of the 'good' countries, made in small batches and have unique paintjobs that ensure you won't see six bikes just like yours on your ride.I bought the Anticosti gravel bike. I had done a very nerdy deep dive into steel bikes and built up a couple of classic steel bikes with modern components to see how well they compared with my quite nice and completely satisfactory carbon fibre gravel bike from one of the 'big 3' manufacturers. Frankly, the old Miyata 610 with 650b wheels & 40mm tires rode just as nice and in some ways nicer. This convinced me to pursue a modern steel gravel bike. The buying experience was just great: I am between the Medium & Large size so wanted to confirm which worked best for me. Simon allowed me to ride the bike for a lengthy test ride. Fantastic as it allowed me to confirm sizing, but also showed that the components for the bike were clearly picked by enthusiasts. Each component seems to have been chosen so as to provide excellent performance, functionality and reliability at a reasonable price.I've been riding my Anticosti for a few weeks now and I can readily say that I'm just blown away by the bike. At the heart of bikes is the frame: I am lucky (or possibly cursed) to be able to feel real differences. The ride is sublime, just as expected. However, what has surprised me is the effect the frame has had on my legs. On Carbon bikes, the big deal is 'stiffer is better'. I've come to believe this is not necessarily true: I've found that on carbon bikes, after a hard ride my leg muscles 'sting' as well as being tired. Not so with the Anticosti. After a hard ride, my legs are tired, yes, but they don't sting and recovery is better. This has amazed me, and I believe is due to the flexing of the steel that is better tuned to me, rather than banging against the very stiff carbon bikes.Anyway, this has been such a fantastic experience for me. A great product, produced in a good country, designed locally by enthusiasts at a Canadian company with all sorts of very nice details on the bike. All of the boxes are ticked for me.read more

Panorama Cycles is a small and personalized shop with carefully developed concept bikes that will meet the needs of the... most demanding bikepacker and gravel rider. Outstanding customer support led me to purchase the Taiga EXP before any details could be made public, and after one year of intensive riding, my EXP never ceases to impress me - whether on tarmac, gravel or single track - it tackles everything with confidence: shifting is precise; the wide handlebars are a blessing; the high trail shines in steep & twisty descents; it offers mounts for everything you could think of; and it is a reasonably light yet robust enough to do anything / go everywhere. Très satisfait.read more

😉read more

Longue vie à Panorama!read more
